Do I need a media server?

The answer is easy for those who have a large audience, as a media server relieves the load from traditional servers. Yet, even if your audience is small, a media server makes sense since viewers are used to consuming content on their own device of choice and all devices have their own preferred ways to display media. A media server lets you focus on creating high-quality content while it handles the heavy lifting of delivering it in the best way.

Problems With All-in-One Media Servers

The typical media servers uses one large application to convert, host, stream and distribute media. Convenience comes at a price, however, meaning a lack of flexibility and much higher resource usage which taxes even the best server hardware in order to deliver consistent results to a relatively small number of viewers. Even more critical than resource usage wasted on unnecessary activities is the fact that all-in-one media servers usually cannot recover when one part crashes. Furthermore, the inflexible design of an all-in-one media server means they often won't allow setup changes for new formats or delivery methods after starting. This inflexible design often requires restarting the entire media server before any changes can occur, a trade-off in convenience versus flexibility.

The MistServer advantage

MistServers flexible design not only solves the inflexibility problems of other media servers but also improves the concept and potential of a media server on multiple levels. Modular by design, MistServer can serve up content from multiple protocols or just a single protocol, freeing up precious resources to be used for more important matters, or to serve a greater number of streams from a single piece of hardware. Lightweight in design, MistServer can be implemented anywhere in the digital supply chain to distribute streams to multiple viewers without being blocked by co-dependencies between multiple users and a single all-in-one media server. In other words, if one viewer runs into trouble another viewer will not be affected, yielding a high-performance media server approach that's designed to use very little resources on anything from the latest-and-greatest server to the smallest set-top box or even the Raspberry Pi. This lets you reach your audience with the hardware you have on hand without the need to start off with costly, dedicated hardware.
